This track by track explanation of Coldplay’s next album is courtesy of coldplaying.com:
“Violet Hill”: One of the strongest of the new songs, the band is considering giving it away as a special promotion in coming weeks and then leaving it off the album. Opening with a jagged distorted guitar riff, the song announces a new template: The stalking, bluesy beat fits nicely with Martin’s earthy vocals and plaintive lyrics: “If you love me, won’t you let me know?”

“42”: The fact that the band is considering this song as the album’s first real single underlines how far they’re willing to a stray from their formula: It’s an elaborate three-part piece, with swirling pianos, strings and beat loops that build to an uptempo climax, with some seriously stoner lyrics: “Those who are dead are not dead/They’re just living in my head.”

“Yes”: Here, Martin’s vocals take center stage like never before: Sounding more aggressive and strong than ever, they sit on top of an irresistible North African string-and-tablas arrangement and ache more convincingly than all the lilting falsetto in the world: “If you’d only, if you’d only say ‘Yes’/I’m just so tired of this loneliness.” It’s the band’s freshest song since “Parachutes.”

“Death and All His Friends”: A straight-up rock tune with a riff that sounds ripped from the Doobie Brothers, piano, and, in the last section, flute.

“Cemetaries of London”: Notice the thematic pattern emerging from the title and lyrics? This one, with an electro loop and hand claps, doesn’t sound as glum as its title portends.

“Life in Technicolor”: Acoustic-guitar driven and jangly, this is one of the few tracks that seems built from the Coldplay template of songs like “Don?t Panic,” only a bit more, well, panicked: “Baby it’s a violent world,” Martin sings.

“Chinese Sleep Chant”: Opening with a jagged guitar riff, the song quickly settles into a propulsive dance-track loop with low-mixed, angelic vocals.

“Strawberry Swing”: This is one of several potential album cuts with Afro-pop and high-life influences: Here, distortion-free finger-picked guitars which sound straight out of Mali mix with a heavy bassline and psychedelic synths. “My Mum comes from Zimbabwe, so I spent a lot of time there,” says Martin. “I used to work in a studio where people played that.”

“Reign of Love”: A lovely layered composition of piano, bass and organ that backs fairytale lyrics.

IphoneFree iPhone

I know this probably seems to good to be true but I honestly know for a fact that it works, I have already received a free ipod through this agency before. All you have to do is go sign up complete one offer, many of which are free (I personally did the eMusic offer because hey why not grab some free music while you are earning a free iPhone. Anyways in the process of signing up make sure you select the referral membership. In that membership all you are required to do is one offer and then once you refer eight friends who also complete offers a free iPhone will be on its way. It’s pretty cool actually. Please at least consider it. By the way the offer is approved by the Better Business Bureau. If you are interested click on the iPhone picture above.

Scarlett JohanssonThat’s right people, if you have heard about it yet it’s time for you to learn the Scarlett Johansson is going to release an entire album. Originally the album was to be called Scarlett Johansson sings Tom Waits, but recently the world was informed the the album will actually be called Anywhere I Lay My Head. The great news is that not only will there still be the 10 Tom Waits covers as originally planned, their will be at least one original track, according to pitchfork.com. Other news about the album is actually pretty interesting. The drummer of Stars Like Fleas, Ryan Sawyer, appears on the album, AND Johansson collaborated with Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Sean Antanaitis of Celebration. This is going to be a good one and you can start to get excited because it is going to be released on May 20th this year. Oh and quickly as a side note, David Bowie provides some back-up vocals on the album and has been quoted say that Scarlett Johansson’s performances are “mystical” and “twice cool.”

————————————————-

There are other exciting upcoming releases aside from Johansson’s and one of them would be the eventual release of the new Coldplay album. It has been almost 3 years since their last release and any Coldplay fan can understand why I get all uppity when I hear news about the new release. The album’s title is still unknown but we do know that the album is being produced by Brian Eno, it will have a running time of about 42 minutes, and the number of tracks appearing on the album is somewhere in the area of 9. Some of the songs tColdplayhat could appear on the album are “Cemeteries of London,” “Violet Hill,” “Poppy Fields,” “42,” “Leftrightleftrightleft,” “Rainy Day,” “Lost!” and “Yes!” Apparently only a few months remain until the album is finished, according to a handwritten recently added to their website. Other various things that have happened in interviews and what not include: Coldplay’s manager claiming that this will be the best Coldplay album so far. The album is notably being recorded in Barcelona which is said to have had a effect on the band’s sound. Coldplay assures us that there will not be any “carnival instruments” and that the music itself will not have a latin overtone, but instead claims that the album “owes its vibrancy and colorfulness to the atmosphere of Buenos Aires, and Barcelona” (the band visited Latin America earlier this year). The members have also claimed that there is a particular song on the album that is everything they’ve ever wanted in a song, and that they are excited to share it with the world. All I can say is, I’m really excited. No release date has been set yet.

————————————————-

This last section of this post is very exciting, and much of the information is bound to change in the near future but… Postal Service has began to work on their second album. Postal Service is the collaboration of Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard and Dntel’s Jimmy Tamborello, and for all those emo kids whose groove flame is beginning to flicker and distinguish since Give Up in 2003, talk of a sophomore album is great news. Gibbard has spoken follow-up album in a recentPostal Service interview on MTV.com, in which he said, “We’re slowly starting. We’re crawling right now, and whether that crawl turns into a walk remains to be seen. But we’ll know more towards the end of the year. I’ve just been touring so much and trying to find time to make it happen and make our schedules line up.” Jimmy Tamborello has also commented on the band’s recent progress and has said that the band is looking to finish the album within the next year. He also has mentioned that he would like to see the female singer, Jenny Lewis, found on the 2003 release Give Up, to be more involved. Only two full songs have been recorded thus far, but the two members plan to get some serious songwriting done soon. Unfortunately no album title has been released yet, and no release date has been given. In fact there isn’t even a title of a track on the album out there yet. Essentially nothing is known about this album except for the fact that it is in the works, and that’s good enough for me.

Rainbow Six Las Vegas 2Rainbow Six: Las Vegas 2. That’s right the best release title for the XBOX 360 is going to have a sequel. The sequel will include over ten new weapons, including a new tactical shotgun, and some pretty darn sexy assault rifles. Not only will the sequel include all the features of the first, but it will also include a terrorist hunt in which four players can play, and many new multiplayer modes. As for the actual campaign, the storyline is said to run parallel to the last game. Actually this game starts before the last but eventually runs parallel. What this means exactly I am not sure, but one thing is certain, and that is that there will not be any levels that will be repeated, nor will there be any maps that will be repeated. All in all I am extremely excited to get my hands on this game, although I do not own an XBOX 360 and it comes out on the same day as Super Smash, May 9th (this is the current release date according to IGN). This is unfortunate because I will be forced to decide which to play on the 9th.
For more details on the new weapons click here.

Death Cab For Cutie
Death Cab For Cutie, as mainstream and as emo as they may be, are still one of my favorite bands, and therefore I am excited to hear that they have announced the release of their next album, which will be titled Narrow Stairs. What we know as of now: The album’s release date is currently set at May 13th, 2008, and in an interview Chris Walla mentioned that the first single will be over eight minutes long. We also know, from the album teaser found on their website, that Ben Gibbard has said that this album is not necessarily going to sound like the others because they feel like they no longer have anything to prove, and therefore decided to do an album that is truest to themselves (that sounded really emo but it wraps up what he said well). Anyways, the tracklist has been as well as the title to the first single, “I Will Possess Your Heart.” Other than all of this there is no other news on the band’s upcoming album.

Gregory House Gregory House is the Jack Bauer of Medicine. I’m just throwing that out there, if you all don’t like it you can send it write back, but honestly you know it’s true. If you are not familiar Gregory House, then you are an idiot, but don’t worry there is still hope. You can start to watching House and your being a cool person will be reinstated. (Your being cool was originally instated because you read my blog.) Anyways House is an amazing show, and the man himself, Sir Gregory, is undeniably awesome. So give the crippled a shot and tune in on Tuesdays at 8 pm central time on FOX, or go by the dvds of the first seasons.

Rock Band on WiiBefore I say anything, I’d like to say that I am the proud owner of a Nintendo Wii, and am therefore excited when I have any news about a great games coming to the Wii. First things first, Rock Band is being developed for the Wii and should be released later this year. This is extremely exciting news for anyone who owns a Wii because the only bit of this market that the Wii is seeing is Guitar Hero III and if you are anything like me it’s beginning to get a little boring trying to beat Raining Blood on the harder difficulties. However, all Wii owners can now look forward to Rock Band. On a side note, it was mentioned in EGM that developers have already started working on new Guitar Heroes for all the major systems.

Super Smash Brothers Brawl Even more exciting than the eventual release of Rock Band on the Wii is the rapidly approaching release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Long time fans of the series will be able to toss pok√©balls and swing Ness’ bat with their usual weapon in hand, the Gamecube controller. The most casual of players will be able to mash away at Wii-mote and use it as if it were a classic NES controller. Players who are looking to become hardcore players can choose either of the previously mentioned or they can try the movement based controls used in the Wii-mote and Nunchuck combination. They also have the option of using the new “classic” controller for the Wii, like you would use a Gamecube controllers. Aside from all of this, all I can say is that I am beyond excited to play the new Super Smash, especially with the addition of several new characters including Sonic the Hedgehog, Snake (of Metal Gear Solid), Kid Icarus, and Pokemon Trainer. The game is set to be released on March 9th, as opposed to its original date in February, but this time we can know for sure, because stores are beginning to sell pre-orders. On the topic of Super Smash, I will leave you with one thing… Online Play. It’s just going to be amazing.

Delta Spirit Delta Spirit, a band out of San Diego, with possibly one of the most original sounds remaining today. Okay, maybe that’s an over exaggeration but they at least have one of the most original sounds that is easily accessible as well (None of that crazy bleeps and blops, nonsensical screaming, or out of tune guitars). I personally knew nothing of this band until I saw them open for Cold War Kids. And I was completely blown away. The band has developed a rock, folk, and gospel hybrid that just seems to work so well. Delta Spirit easily stole the show that night, especially with their final song, People, Turn Around, when band members from Cold War Kids stepped on and began play whatever auxiliary percussion instrument they could find. Not only was the this entertaining to watch but it also immediately got the crowd into the song, and despite nearly everyone in the venue having never heard the song, everyone started singing along whenever the chorus rolled around. There is really no point in me attempting to explain, I can only recommend that you listen to them on MySpace, or the Hype Machine, or Daytrotter, and that you also look to see if they are doing a show in your area sometime soon. Odds are, you will immediately fall in love. Please just check them out, but if you are too lazy I have chased down a free mp3 of their’s via Spin Magazine.
